Big Ten Friday Night Football

Today, we were apprised by the Commissioner of the Big Ten that the new conference television agreement calls for six of the 105 football games to be played on Friday nights beginning in 2017. There has been a somewhat steady intrusion by NCAA conferences and teams to infringe on Friday nights, heretofore traditional high school football nights. It is my understanding that Nebraska will be assigned only one home Friday football game in a three-year period. We believe that the Friday Husker football games will have a serious impact on such Friday night high school games, both in terms of attendance and support. Our strong wish would be that such infringements not occur; however, we know and understand that this decision was made in the best interest of the Big Ten Conference and University of Nebraska. It will be our intentions to work with the University of Nebraska and with NSAA member high schools to minimize such conflicts. We have and will continue to have a great working relationship with the University as they assist us with hosting a number of state championship events. It may be prudent and necessary for Nebraska high schools to consider Thursday or Saturday games when the Huskers are assigned to play on Friday nights. We must do all within our collective power to continue to make high school football both attractive and relevant.   Dr. Jim Tenopir, Executive Director Nebraska School Activities Association November 2, 2016
